WHERE MARITIME MEMORIES ARE MADE: RODD HOTELS AND RESORTS

(2023 - Winter/Spring Issue)

Writer: NANCIE HALL

Romantic with a wee bit of magic, the east coast of Canada is a seductress with sweeping beaches and rugged coastlines, historic cities and colourful villages, world-class golf, and sensational seafood—all delivered with genuine hospitality and friendly Maritime charm.

Whether you spend a night or two in different locations or prefer a home base for your explorations, Rodd Hotels & Resorts boasts seven distinctly different properties throughout New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island with a variety of packages that make it easy to create Maritime memories.

A Family Affair

Wallet-friendly family packages mean children eat free, stay free and golf free during their stay. And if your clan includes a fur baby, they stay free as well. In Charlottetown, PEI there’s an extra special Rodd Royalty property that’s a popular family favourite.  Located in the heart of everything—from nearby beaches to shops—there’s much fun to be had at the hotel’s glass-enclosed swimming pool, 32-metre waterslide, and the Games Zone for kids of all ages. In Nova Scotia, the waterfront Rodd Grand Yarmouth has adjoining suites for extra space and nearby adventures like stargazing, a trip to Tusket Islands to learn about spies and buried treasure, a climb up Cape Forchu Lighthouse, or a visit to the Firefighters’ Museum of Nova Scotia. In New Brunswick at the Rodd Moncton, the world-famous tidal bore is front and centre, while attractions like a waterpark, butterfly gardens, the zoo and Magnetic Hill keep little ones entertained.

Just the Two of You

Need a reset? Get away to the Rodd Charlottetown and channel the elegance of the 1930s with its grand lobby and upscale accommodation, some with fireplaces and soaker tubs. Browse through quaint shops, or take in a show at the Confederation Centre of the Arts. The nearby five-star Rodd Crowbush Golf & Beach Resort and luxurious Rodd Brudenell River Resort have all you need for a relaxing retreat with on-site spas, picturesque cottages with sweeping views and nature trails that beg to be explored. In New Brunswick, couples can relax at the Rodd Miramichi’s riverside location and do nothing or enjoy all this urban resort has to offer with tubing, world-class fishing, kayaking, and hiking trails at its doorstep.

Tee Time

PEI is a golf lover’s paradise with over 30 golf courses making the diminutive province home to the most courses per capita in Canada. And, Rodd Resorts is home to three of the province’s top-rated courses. The Links at Crowbush Cove is a “must play,” ranked 6th in the country by SCOREGolf Magazine for its challenging greens and expansive vistas of the dunes and ocean. The Brudenell River Golf Course is heralded as the Island’s most popular and has hosted golf tournaments, while Dundarave Golf Course is a red sandstone 18-hole championship course with fairways that meander through stunning terrain. Junior golfers play free with an adult at all Rodd hotel courses.

Must Try

Tuck on a bib and enjoy a whole lobster, or sample it in a salad roll, chowder, pasta, poutine, and more. A trip to the east coast is not complete without a feast of this sublime crustacean. PS—Don’t miss David’s Restaurant at Rodd Crowbush Golf & Beach Resort, which won the PEI Potato Seafood Chowder Championship two years running.

Fun Facts

• Newlyweds Wally and Sally Rodd built several cottages in 1935 to attract visitors, which grew to become Rodd Hotels, one of Atlantic Canada’s largest privately-owned hotel companies, and now overseen by the third generation of Rodds.

• Starry, starry nights.  The skies are so dark and clear around Yarmouth that the area has been certified as the first Starlight Reserve in North America by the International Starlight Foundation, a UNESCO-supported organization.

• Kouchibouguac National Park, a 30-minute drive from Rodd Miramichi, has sandy beaches and the warmest salt water north of Virginia.
