STAY AT BUNGALOW BEACH RESORT: INDULDGE IN OLD FLORIDA

(2022 - Winter/Spring Issue)

Writer: MADELAINE LAFRAMBOISE

Do you seek unspoiled beaches? How about a secluded cluster of only 15 cedar cottages, each one different from the rest? And how about that unhurried pace of life?

Welcome to Bungalow Beach Resort. On Anna Maria Island, ever since this vintage beachfront resort first opened in the ’30s, folks have arrived here to enjoy a stress-free vacation. Overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, you too can feel the island magic at this classic oceanfront property. Here’s how to indulge in Old Florida.

Bungalow Beach Style

At the independently-owned beach property you might play a game of chess on the resort’s oversize chess board, swim in the lap pool or join the neighbours for a barbecue in the courtyard. There are no schedules and no guilt trips for doing nothing more than basking on the private beach or snoozing under a beach umbrella. Charming patios give you front-row seats to watch beach life in real time too. So, take time to smell the flowers! The hedged-in hideaway resort has bowers of tropical blooms and shady palm trees.

Bungalow Specialties

You won’t find cookie-cutter interiors at this one-of-a-kind island getaway. Each bungalow has its own unique design while five of them boast full gulf-front views. Be away from the crowds with no one to bother you as these cottages are self-contained with a full kitchen. No daily housekeeping service means there is no need to worry about having your island time interrupted either. At night, there’s the option to have the window unit AC (there’s no central AC) blast the night away. Or crack open your screen window or door and let the sound of the waves lull you to sleep.

Bungalow Classics

There are more no-nonsense frills—instead of 24/7 cable TV, there are streaming services like Amazon Prime. Once you have reached this cluster of cottages by the sea, you will want to unplug, recharge and refresh. Even though there is Wi-Fi, it’s time to go for that long overdue digital detox. Still if you insist on staying active, there are plenty of activities on and off Anna Maria Island. From parasailing and horseback riding on the beach to fishing from the pier and sportfishing charters, Bungalow Beach Resort is in the heart of old-fashioned Floridian fun.

INSIDER TIP

Once on the island, visitors can manage nicely without a car. Free trolleys run up and down the island daily.
