NESTING IN LUXURY - THE LODGES AT HUMBER VALLEY RESORT

(2014 - Spring Issue)

Writer: ELISABETH SCHMOLL

A decade ago, New Zealanders Jean and Simon Burch came to Newfoundland on a holiday and stayed.

Today, as proprietors of the luxurious Lodges at Humber Valley Resort in western Newfoundland, they share their love of the area with guests.

“The legendary Newfoundland hospitality made us feel instantly at home,” says Jean. And the Lodges do the same for visitors to Humber Valley. They are large, comfortable homes away from home, and the Burches are charming hosts who ensure that everyone’s needs are met.

Each of the 10 lodges has a great room, Wi-Fi, satellite TV, fireplace, bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, and extensive decks. Set on large wooded lots, they overlook Deer Lake or the Doug Carrick-designed 18-hole River Course at Humber Valley. Guests can cook in well-appointed kitchens or on barbecues. Recently added, one of the ten lodges is now a luxury, un-hosted, lakeside B&B. Should guests wish to eat out, Madison’s Restaurant is a popular spot.

The Outdoor Scene

Summertime offers great golfing, hiking, cycling, swimming or water sports—in Humber Valley or Gros Morne National Park. About a dozen rivers are ideal spots for salmon fishing. In winter, the area is perfect for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and dogsledding, while Marble Mountain attracts downhill skiers and provides a year-round zip line. At the end of the day, visitors can luxuriate under the stars in a hot tub or the resort’s soothing spa.
