MUSKOKA TREASURES

(2014 - Spring/Summer Issue)

Writer: JOSEPHINE MATYAS

It should come as no surprise that one of Canada’s premier outdoor playgrounds, Muskoka, is also home to some of the country’s best golf courses. Muskoka is known as a land of lakes and cottages, luxurious resorts and delightful country inns. In this part of the country, visitors find a place blessed with a storied history and the perfect setting to indulge in a buffet of outdoor activities. Muskoka has earned its spot on the map as an active golf destination.

Rocky Crest Golf Resort

Named one of Canada’s top courses by Golfweek and SCOREGolf, Rocky Crest Golf Resort incorporates the cantankerous Canadian Shield landscape with the lush beauty of the surrounding forests to create an opportunity for play that can aptly be described as “the Muskoka golf experience.”

Designed by award-winning golf course architect Thomas McBroom, Rocky Crest is considered one of the best modern-era courses in the country. The chance to play is available to members of the ClubLink network of courses and to guests staying at the resort property.

Rocky Crest is a seasonal, all-suite resort (open May to October) on the shores of Lake Joseph, right in the heart of Muskoka. Each of the 65 suites and 19 fractional ownership cottages is outfitted with kitchenette, fireplace and Jacuzzi bath. Built in the mid-1960s, Rocky Crest is the quintessential Muskoka resort, updated in ways that manage to maintain resort-style charm with all the modern-day touches.

Whether drawn by the award-winning golf or the relaxing surroundings, guests gravitate to swimming in the lake or in one of two resort pools, canoeing and paddleboating, hiking the resort’s 12 kilometres of trails or just kicking back with a good book in a beachside chair. Four on-property restaurants cover the spectrum from a casual fireside lounge to fine dining set against a backdrop of a sweeping vista across the bay. With group facilities that can accommodate 200, Rocky Crest is a popular venue for meetings and weddings.

Sherwood Inn

One of Rocky Crest’s sister properties on Lake Joseph, the Sherwood Inn, is the ultimate Ontario inn getaway, which ultimately blends historic charm with the services we expect in the modern world. Open year-round, the romantic inn is popular as a couples’ getaway and for small, intimate weddings. Wintertime weddings feature horse-drawn sleigh rides, bonfires and a heart-shaped ice rink. During the summer months, the Lake Joseph beachfront makes the perfect setting for a sunset ceremony. Summer or winter, couples can book the entire resort for their private getaway-style wedding—one where friends and family will feel at home.

A Sherwood Inn stay feeds the body as well as the soul. It has been recognized as a destination for culinary excellence. Guests especially love the private wine cellar dining experience with room for 14 diners to experience an exclusive chef’s table menu, surrounded by more than 2,000 bottles of wine. For the past seven years the inn has won the prestigious Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for its extensive wine list, which specializes in vintages from Australia, California, Italy and the Bordeaux region of France.
