IT\'S SO MIAMI - BRIGHTER, HIPPER AND HOTTER

(2012 - Winter Issue)

Writer: KEVIN FRITZ

Visiting Miami, you are bound to hear languages from around the world—and meet people from every corner of the earth.

You’ll find fashions from New York, Paris, Rome and Sao Paulo. Art from Basel. Celebrities from Hollywood. Rock bands from Argentina. String quartets from Europe.

Its magnificent state-of-the-art performing arts centre anchors the city’s bustling downtown. The new Frank Gehry-designed home of Miami’s New World Symphony is a block away from world-class shopping on fabulous Lincoln Road.

No doubt about it, Miami is brighter, hipper, hotter, cooler, friendlier, sunnier and sultrier than ever.

What’s Your Pleasure?

Picking a place to stay is half of the fun. Miami is full of new hotels, and South Beach is home to the world’s largest collection of restored art deco, art nouveau and cutting-edge boutique hotels. And the food? Newly arrived standout restaurants have opened next door to the international superstars and Miami’s own world-renowned homegrown classics. Almost every corner hosts another ethnic favourite, trendy late-scene spot or neighbourhood haunt.

When it’s time for sports, Miami has you covered. It’s home to NASCAR’s Homestead-Miami Speedway, the Sony Ericsson Open, the Cadillac Golf Championship and the Miami Marlins, who now play in a new world-class baseball stadium. Waterskiing, kayaking, windsurfing, diving, kitesurfing and jet skiing are available almost anywhere along the Atlantic Ocean or Biscayne Bay. And Miami-Dade County features two national parks—Biscayne National Preserve Park and Everglades National Park.

But who knew Miami is also a world-class family-friendly destination? Between its attractions and sparkling beaches there are plenty of things to keep the young minds busy. Zoo Miami is one of the first free-range zoos in the country—the exhibits are entirely cageless. The Miami Seaquarium is located on the causeway between downtown Miami and Key Biscayne. And the Miami Children’s Museum, with its motto of “Play, Learn, Imagine, Create,” allows children to explore everything from a supermarket to a television studio, picking up valuable lessons along the way.

Make time for a little history at the 20-hectare Vizcaya estate, a European-style mansion offering a look at life in turn-of-the-century south Florida. Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, located on the south end of Key Biscayne, is home to the famous Cape Florida Lighthouse built in 1825.

To see and be seen, the most popular events in Miami are Art Basel in December, an international art show featuring modern works from more than 2,000 artists, and the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival in February.
