(2012 - Winter Issue)

St. Petersburg/Clearwater is more than just pristine sands and crystal-clear waters, but if it’s top-notch beaches you are looking for, you’ve come to the right place.

From Clearwater Beach south to Treasure Island and beyond, these playgrounds of white, soft sand and calm, alluring Gulf waters are some of the best around. In fact, St. Pete Beach was voted Trip Advisor’s No. 1 Beach in the U.S. and No. 5 in the entire world.

Take a break from the beach and explore the surprising exhibitions, museums, artwork and events that also make this area so special. The Dalí Museum not only features the most comprehensive collection left behind by Salvador Dalí, but the museum itself was named one of the 20 Most Beautiful Museums in the World by Flavorwire. Also in St. Petersburg, the Chihuly Collection at the Morean Arts Center is a must-see. The glassmaker’s masterpieces are spectacular.

One of the biggest celebrities in this central coastal area of Florida lives at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Winter, the dolphin, splashed onto the silver screen in Dolphin Tale, the real-life story of a young dolphin whose tail became entangled in a crab trapline. Winter is the first dolphin to have a prosthetic tail.

Plan to visit legendary Tarpon Springs, just 20 minutes north of Clearwater. It will take you thousands of miles away to a coastal town in Greece. Heavily influenced by Greek culture, Tarpon Springs is best known as the sponge capital of the world, as well as for its Greek fare and serene beaches.
