EMERALD COASTING IN SNOW-WHITE SAND - AN IDYLLIC DESTINATION ON THE BALMY GULF COAST

(2014 - Fall/Winter Issue)

Writer: .

Escape the cold and follow the birds south to the Heart of Florida’s Emerald Coast, an idyllic destination of snow-white sand beaches and emerald-green waters. That’s “Emerald Coasting.”

Comprising Destin, Ft. Walton Beach and Okaloosa Island with 39 kilometres of toesoothing, award-winning beaches, the only shovel you need when you winter here is the kind that comes with a sand bucket.

Discover the Magic

For decades, Canadians have been lured to this paradise on the Gulf of Mexico known for its legendary fishing and golfing, world-class attractions, fresh-caught seafood and balmy weather.

“Emerald Coasting” also means adventure! Take in a show at Florida’s Gulfarium, the world’s oldest continuously operating live marine show. Venture out to sea on a dolphin-watching cruise or on a pirate ship, some geared specifically for adults. Want more adventure? Board a helicopter and get a bird’s-eye view of the tranquil coast.

Known as the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village,” Destin is home to Florida’s largest charter fishing fleet. Experienced captains take anglers beyond the shoreline to catch grouper, amberjack and red snapper. Some restaurants will even clean and cook your catch for you.

If you golf, prepare to be dazzled. Experience the Regatta Bay Golf & Country Club on the Choctawhatchee Bay where each hole on this 6,304-metre, par-72 course was designed to take advantage of the natural vegetation, with added hazards that blend flawlessly into the course.

If you’d rather carry a shopping bag than a golf bag, you can take your pick from distinctive boutiques, traditional malls, charming downtown areas, enchanting open-air complexes and picturesque pedestrian villages. Go-to places for shoppers include Destin Commons, HarborWalk Village and Downtown Ft. Walton Beach.

The art galleries and antique shops are filled with treasures. The natural beauty and charm at the Heart of Florida’s Emerald Coast has created a haven for artists of all kinds, making this a great place to find a one-of-a-kind souvenir.
