A PERFECT DAY OF ADVENTURE IN NIAGARA FALLS

(2022 - Fall/Winter Issue)

Writer: DREAMSCAPES STAFF

Perched just a short walk from the iconic Horseshoe Falls, Canada’s latest must-see attraction comes in an unlikely form: a historic hydroelectric power station.

Revered for nearly a century as “The Cathedral of Power,” this is the location of the Niagara Parks Power Station, which once was home to the world’s largest hydroelectric generators of their kind. Built in 1905, the industrial engineering marvel provided hydropower to this region and areas of New York State. Known as the “Canadian Niagara Power Company generating station,” it harnessed the powerful energy of the Horseshoe Falls and turned it into a great source of electricity.

Now, years after its turbines came to a halt, the wonder of this hydropower pioneer has been revived in a new visitor experience that highlights both the remarkable history and unique architectural features of this 115-year-old landmark. Today, the Niagara Parks Power Station is home to the city’s newest tourist attraction, called “The Tunnel,” which aptly opened this past summer on Canada Day.

LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL

Take in the wonder of the magnificent Horseshoe Falls and Niagara Gorge from an all-new perspective. Start your tunnel journey at the Niagara Parks Power Station, which opened in 2021. Prepare to descend 55 metres via a glass-enclosed elevator with each floor lit. Don’t blink because these elevator gaps reveal the entire infrastructure that was required through the power generator process.

Once the elevator doors open, it’s time to explore the 671-metre-long tunnel! Prepare to witness a breathtaking view of the falls from the newly built viewing platform, which extends 20-metres into the Niagara River. Breathe, smell, look and listen to the roaring thunder of this natural world wonder.

NIAGARA PARKS THRILLS AND SPILLS

Once you return to ground level from the tunnel’s mesmerizing view, take a short stroll along the Niagara River to Table Rock Centre. For nearly as long as Niagara Falls has been a global travel destination, Table Rock Centre has been at the heart of the falls.

This iconic building was recently refurbished, adding new shopping and dining experiences. For dining, you can’t beat the views! Table Rock House Restaurant is the closest you can dine to the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Perched on the brink, enjoy a locally sourced and internationally inspired menu overlooking the breathtaking falls.

STAND AT THE BOTTOM OF NIAGARA FALLS

Before you explore the shops and dining scene at Table Rock Centre, head to one of the other Niagara Parks’ top attractions, Journey Behind the Falls. There are two unique observation decks as well as the 130-year-old-tunnels that take you deep into the bedrock directly behind the falling water. It’s hard to imagine but the sheer volume of an Olympic-sized pool (up to 2,800 cubic metres of water) comes crashing down, thundering over the brink of the Horseshoe Falls every second before you. You will feel the power of every drop from the Lower Observation Deck.

A ONE-OF-A-KIND SENSORY EXPERIENCE

After dinner, head back to the Niagara Parks Power Station and experience it in a whole new way with Currents, an epic sound and light night show inside the heart of the plant. A rainbow of colour cascades onto the vertebrae of this repurposed power station, casting new animated forms onto the dormant machinery. Each step you take projects a light show of rivers beneath the feet. Music to the multimedia experience pulsates in this one-of-a-kind sensory journey. Walk through the historic space again and explore the incredible transformation of water to power.
