Spend a relaxing vacation in Delray Beach, nestled on Florida’s southeast coast. This stylish village by the sea offers fashionable boutiques and more than 30 fine art galleries and artists’ studios. Or hang out at the municipal beach and try snorkelling, sailing, paddleboarding or beach volleyball. Ride into the sunset March 22 and 23 during the Twilight bike festival, and Savor the Avenue on March 27, the annual culinary festival on downtown Atlantic Avenue featuring four-course dinners paired with wine. Tropical breezes and warm temperatures year-round make this the perfect destination for any season. downtowndelraybeach.com

Once off limits to all but China’s emperors and their families, the Forbidden City opens its doors at Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum from March 8 to September 1. Many of the treasures on display, from textiles and calligraphy to a throne of lacquer, jade and ivory, have never been seen outside Beijing. China’s emperors lived in the sprawling complex during the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties. The exhibition begins outside the walls of the Imperial Palace, and brings characters from the royal household to life as visitors make their way to the emperor’s personal study. It ends with the departure of the last emperor in 1924. The exhibition also commemorates the ROM’s 100th anniversary. rom.on.ca

A series of special events and exhibitions are planned throughout 2014, culminating in a symbolic “wall” of helium-filled balloons stretching 12 kilometres along the former inner-city border on November 9. The longest remaining stretch of the Wall is the East Side Gallery, decorated by 118 artists from 21 countries.
