THE SPORTING CIRCUIT IN CENTRAL FLORIDA

(2014 - Winter/Spring Issue)

Writer: JOHN RIDOUT

Toronto Blue Jays spring training. Daytona 500 and Bike Week. ESPN’s Wide World of Sports. Best Western hotels. Golf.

That’s our formula for the perfect guys’ holiday in central Florida.

This year, our group of four dads is taking three weeks of Florida time in February and March to hit the beaches, the racetracks and the golf courses. And to groove with the boys of summer at spring training. The moms and kids will meet us for March break at Disney World, which has something for everyone, including sports fans.

We’ve booked into comfortably affordable Best Western hotels, which are great for groups and always close to the action. In this case, our Best Western home bases are also close to long stretches of beach. Free Wi-Fi makes it easy to stay in touch with the office back home, and a complimentary breakfast kicks off every day on the right note.

On Track for Hot Times

In the Daytona area, we’ll join some Florida-based friends for a few rounds of enjoyable golf, although some of us might get serious on a couple of championship courses. We’ll head over to Daytona Beach for the Daytona 500 on February 23 and Bike Week March 7 to 16. When the kids arrive, we’ll drive over to Orlando’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World for some family entertainment.

Baseball fans will spend a couple of days in Dunedin on the Gulf of Mexico, hanging with the Toronto Blue Jays in spring training.

Both Daytona Beach and Dunedin have enough activities, shopping and dining to satisfy everyone’s tastes and agendas. We all love to walk Daytona’s wide white-sand beaches and take dips in the Atlantic when we get too warm. The hustle and bustle of the boardwalk amusement area and pier are magnets for kids and adults alike. By contrast, the charming town of Dunedin lures those with a taste for serene Gulf of Mexico sunsets, arty shops and gourmet seafood.

Best Western Florida: on the Money

Some of us will be redeeming Best Western Rewards points for our rooms; others will continue to earn 10 points for every U.S. dollar spent. And we all keep an eye out for promotions and special offers throughout the year. Hotels are grouped into three categories: BEST WESTERN, BEST WESTERN PLUS and BEST WESTERN PREMIER.
