Lauderdale-By-The-Sea

(2015 - Winter Issue)

Writer: Steve Winston

Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is everything you’d want in a small, homey, seaside village. And more.

Situated on a barrier island just north of Fort Lauderdale, the town has become a big draw for families and young people . . . and an exciting nighttime spot. A treasured little hideaway for decades, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea has become a vibrant family destination for second and third generations.

In winter, the town comes alive! At the popular downtown plaza by the beach, people window-shop, dine at sidewalk cafés, meander down to the ocean, relax in Adirondack chairs or on benches created from old boats, picnic, and engage in a variety of outdoor games. On the second and fourth Sundays of each month, there’s dancing in the plaza and a colourful farmers’ market every Sunday at Town Hall. New shops hum with activity and sell everything from sweet treats to kayaks and paddleboards.

There’s no need for a car, either. The Pelican Hopper takes you all around town, while the Sun Trolley transports you to nearby Fort Lauderdale destinations such as the upscale Galleria Mall. The town is a walkable, enjoyable, active beach village for all ages and all generations.

Lauderdale-By-The-Sea’s motto aptly sums up the feel of the town: “Relax . . . You’re Here!”
