HIDDEN ADVENTURES

(2012 - Winter Issue)

Writer: KEVIN FRITZ

When you visit Central Florida’s Polk County, you are treated to one of the most intriguing
locales in the Sunshine State.

Tour an orange grove and pick fresh citrus, zip across lakes on an airboat eco-adventure or cheer on real cowboys in an action-packed rodeo. Or visit one of its distinctive attractions that are sure to please the entire family.

Polk County is home to the venerable LEGOLAND Florida in Winter Haven with more than 50 rides, shows and attractions. Want to cool off? The attraction also just opened LEGOLAND Water Park. In nearby Polk City, check out Fantasy of Flight—home to the world’s largest collection of vintage aircraft—and climb on board a real B-17 Flying Fortress and imagine being on a WW II bombing mission.

In Lake Wales, the historic Bok Tower houses one of the world’s finest carillons with 60 bells that ring every half hour. Its gardens were designed by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr.  Speaking of famed architects, Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Child of the Sun” collection is on display at Florida Southern College in Lakeland.

A big draw to Polk County is its lakes—all 554 of them—and year-round, world-class bass fishing. Golf is another favourite. The new Streamsong Resort and Spa is due to open two new spectacular 18-hole courses soon.

After a fun-filled day, you’ll find numerous accommodation choices, from nationally recognized hotels and quaint bed and breakfasts to RV parks and campgrounds.
