BRIMMING WITH CHARM

(2013 - Winter/Spring Issue)

Writer: ELIZABETH CLARKE

It’s time to explore Bradenton and its gulf islands—Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key.

Quietly tucked between Tampaand Sarasota, it’s living up to its billing as “Real. Authentic. Florida.” It’s a great place to discover a slower pace and total release.

Bradenton offers a busy downtown with restaurants, shops and arts and history, while relaxed Anna Maria Island lets you enjoy casual beach bars and stunning sunsets. Quiet Longboat Key enchants visitors with its incredibly beautiful water, and mainland Lakewood Ranch draws you in with upscale restaurants and shopping, along with farmers’ markets, festivals and a small movie theatre.

For a pleasant all-day destination, visit the area’s new Riverwalk, which stretches along the historic Manatee River in downtown Bradenton. The 2.4-kilometre-long park features a splash fountain, playground and skateboard park for kids; as well as a fishing pier, day dock, beach volleyball court and an “outdoor living room,” offering shaded spots where you can enjoy the weather with a good book. A beautiful amphitheatre anchors the area.

For accommodation, consider the islands’ villas and cottages, such as Pineapplefish luxury villas on Anna Maria or Cannons by the Sea Cottages on Longboat Key. They’re perfect for immersing yourself in the area’s Old Florida tranquility and charm.
