BIG EVENTS FOR 2018

(2018 - Winter/Spring Issue)

Writer: JOSEPHINE MATYAS

Everyone loves a party, big or small. Whether you have a specific destination in mind or find a celebration by happenstance, these special events are a great way to add a little zip to your travels. Looking for some ideas?

2018 marks the 300th anniversary of San Antonio, Texas, one of the state’s most historic cities. The city has a year-long calendar filled with events showcasing history, education, arts and culture. During Commemorative Week (May 1–6) there will be sunset services, a Founder’s Gala, special presentations of shows, concerts, dance and art, as well as events at the city’s historic World Heritage missions (Alamo, Espada, San Jose, Concepcion and San Juan). There will be a stretch of almost 10 kilometres of musical entertainment, health and fitness opportunities, historical facts and tours all culminating in fireworks over every mission. No one parties like New Orleans, Louisiana, and in 2018 the Crescent City will be rolling out the red carpet to mark its tricentennial. Art shows and exhibitions, concerts and musical events showcasing NOLA as the cradle of jazz (including the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival), a springtime visit from the Tall Ships and a year-end festival of lights are just some of the events. 2018nola.com

“Blackbeard 300: Commemorating North Carolina’s Rich Maritime History” is a series of travelling exhibits to mark the 300th anniversary of a time when the infamous pirate terrorized the communities along the North Carolina coastline (including Ocracoke, where he was ultimately brought to justice). Exhibits and special events will include artifacts from Blackbeard’s wrecked flagship, the unveiling of a new State Highway Historical Marker at Fort Macon State Park and an array of exciting educational experiences. ncdcr.gov/bb300

Alabama’s 200th birthday is still a year away in 2019, but for the full year beforehand the state is rolling out educational programs, community activities and statewide initiatives to teach, inspire and entertain visitors. “Making Alabama: A Bicentennial Traveling Exhibit” on the state’s history, culture and geography showcases the decisions and turning points that shaped the state (March 2018 through December 2019). alabama200.org

For the 70th year, the Maine Lobster Festival marks the celebration of all things lobster. This annual five-day event takes place in Rockland, Maine, over the first weekend of August and, after seven decades, has become an internationally recognized celebration of local seafood. mainelobsterfestival.com

And finally, mark your calendar on Labour Day weekend 2018 for what may be a very loud celebration in Milwaukee for the 115th anniversary of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. The birthday events are expected to attract thousands of Harley riders from all over the nation and the world. harley-davidson.com
