BARCELÓ HOTELS AND RESORTS - TAPPING INTO THE BEST WORLDWIDE

(2014 - Winter/Spring Issue)

Writer: PAUL GALLANT

When a hotelier’s 142 properties are scattered on beaches and in cities from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean and beyond, there’s a knack to getting the balance right at each location.

For the family-owned Barceló Group, founded in Palma de Majorca, Spain, almost 83 years ago, the strategy is straightforward: tap into the best of what’s local while maintaining high global standards of hospitality. The vistas, the smiling faces and the cultures may differ dramatically from place to place, but the feeling of luxury, of being pampered and delighted is meant to remain consistent across 17 different countries with some properties specializing in everything from golf to business to family fun.

The company features a wide variety of hotels and resort types to accommodate all travellers, from four-star hotels and resorts to five-star luxurious accommodation. Barceló specializes in all-inclusive resorts that make vacation planning both convenient and affordable by offering one upfront all-encompassing price.

Exacting Standards

Canadian sun-seekers may be most familiar with Barceló’s all-inclusive resorts in premium beachfront locations in Mexico and the Caribbean. Ranging dramatically in size and style, each depends on local talent and local cuisine to evoke its quintessential spirit. Last November, when the company took over the management of an existing 350-room property in San José del Cabo, Mexico, the all-inclusive Barceló Grand Faro Los Cabos, the sweeping beach and stellar views were the most appealing part of the deal. But Barceló also decided to bring along top chef Arcadio Chi Rodriguez, with his finesse working with fresh Baja California ingredients, to ensure the meals reflected the best of what the region has to offer.

At the same time, Barceló Grand Faro’s staff were retrained and its policies retooled to bring the service up to Barceló’s standards. “It’s all about the details,” says Nashelly Tapia, sales manager at Barceló Grand Faro Los Cabos, who has been with Barceló for more than four years. “We bring attention to even the smallest things.” Tapia says it’s no surprise that hosting weddings, those tempests of fine details, are an integral part of how Barceló has built its reputation.

The chain certainly has a knack for providing value at various price points including Premium and Palace Deluxe. Even within a destination, Barceló provides perks such as check-in privileges, a pillow menu and laundry service with its Premium Club. Barceló is the rare brand that does try to offer something for everyone.
