Writer: JOSEPHINE MATYAS

U.S. destinations are gearing up for an action-packed 2022. Many places are marking special anniversaries while others have expanded their attractions and facilities.

Here’s a sneak peek.

In Georgia, this year marks Jekyll Island State Park’s 75th anniversary. The island—located between Jacksonville and Savannah—will host celebrations with vintage drive-in movies, fireworks, a Beach Village block party, as well as special museum programming. The year caps off with November’s award-winning Shrimp & Grits Festival. Meanwhile Columbus, Georgia—a popular whitewater rafting and kayaking destination, and home of the world’s longest urban whitewater course—will host an international kayaking race in 2022. exploregeorgia.org

The year 2022 is the 35th anniversary of the cult movie Dirty Dancing, filmed at Mountain Lake Lodge in Pembroke, Virginia. The resort is planning Dirty Dancing-themed weekends with dance lessons and dance parties. In central Virginia, the Shenandoah Caverns will celebrate its milestone centennial anniversary packed with vintage Old Virginia. Watch for a big birthday bash reception with re-enactors; a time capsule opening; an autumn celebratory event under the theme of “Honoring our Past — Inspiring our Future,” and more. mtnlakelodge.com; virginia.org

Visitors can explore 100 kilometres of the Grand Strand’s natural splendour, play their best game of golf and find that perfect bite in the hyperlocal dining scene. Many area resorts will offer special exclusive deals for Canadians. Other special events are being planned for Can-Am Days (March 12–20). Canadian ID is required to take advantage of special deals. visitmyrtlebeach.com
