A SIZZLING HOLIDAY ITINERARY

(2013 - Winter Issue)

Writer: ELISABETH SCHMOLL

Fly into Miami. Rent a car. Shop in South Beach. Laze in Key West. Stay at Best Western.

That’s my holiday plan for this year and I’m sticking to it.

South Beach Shopping Spree

I like to punctuate the end of a year by treating myself to some dazzling holiday treats. And I can’t think of a better place to find those than in the hot shops of South Beach. I’ll start by strolling over to Lincoln Road Mall, an eight-block-long pedestrian walkway lined with architecturally fascinating shops, restaurants and cafés. I’m sure I’ll find some fabulous shades, sunblock and swimsuits for Key West. Then I’ll head over to Ocean Drive to parade with the kings and queens of cool as they strut their stuff on one of the world’s glitziest promenades. And I’ll be sure to pick up some pricey souvenirs of this special “me” time.

New Year’s Eve in Key West

This town’s annual year-end party—the New Year’s Eve Shoe Drop Celebration—is as wild as it gets. Duval Street is closed off, and I’ll kick up my heels with the best of them because I can spend the next few days recovering on the beach. The ghost of Hemingway lingers everywhere, and he’ll doubtless be smiling upon Sloppy Joe’s Bar during the Conch Shell Drop. But I’m most looking forward to the Red High Heel Drop with drag queen Sushi at the Bourbon St. Pub.

Best Western Florida

I find myself returning to Best Western every time I travel to Florida. At any of their 99 hotels there I can rest assured that I’ll get caring service, clean rooms, free Wi-Fi and breakfast, and personal necessities such as an iron, ironing board and hair dryer. Each independently owned and operated hotel reflects the charm and culture of its surrounding area, and is close to amenities and attractions.

Hotels fit into one of three categories: BEST WESTERN, BEST WESTERN PLUS and BEST WESTERN PREMIER. This means I can match my hotel to my mood and budget. Best Western Rewards is also a big plus since I earn 10 points for every U.S. dollar spent, can redeem points for hotel stays with no blackout dates, and benefit from exclusive offers throughout the year. And my points never expire.
