Salvador Dalí once said, “When I paint, the sea roars. The others splash about in the bath.”
How fitting that The Dalí Museum sits seaside in St. Petersburg, amusing throngs of visitors who come to the area during the fall and winter season to enjoy the beauty of the Gulf coast and the arts.
Welcome to the natural and cultural gem of Florida’s west coast.
A Top International Destination
St. Petersburg/Clearwater is building on a long list of awards for its stunning white sand beaches with a cultural event of the ages: “Picasso/Dalí, Dalí/Picasso.” Home to the world’s largest collection of Salvador Dalí’s works outside of Spain, the Dalí Museum is playing host to an exclusive three-month exhibit with two of the art world’s biggest names. The landmark event begins on November 8 and runs through February 16 when it moves to Barcelona, the only other stop for the exhibit, which features rarely loaned works from more than 25 international art museums and private collections. No wonder The New York Times named St. Petersburg one of the “Top 52 Places to Visit in 2014.”
While Picasso/Dalí are headlining St. Pete, “Winter” the dolphin is making another splash in Clearwater. The famed tail-less dolphin from Dolphin Tale has teamed up with “Hope” for a real-life sequel to the movie filmed at Clearwater Marine Aquarium—Dolphin Tale 2, which is playing in theatres around the globe. After seeing the dolphin celebrities, hop on the
St. Pete/Clearwater dolphin trail, which boasts more than 100 uniquely designed dolphins as public art.
As you explore, don’t forget to enjoy some warm sun and white sand at Fort De Soto Park, the perfect mix of nature and convenience with 200 campsites, boat ramps, two fishing piers, kayaking and almost five kilometres of beaches. After all, it was named the “Best Beach for Families” by Parents magazine in 2011.
