A CENTRE FOR ALL CANADIANS

(2018 - Spring/Summer Issue)

Writer: ELIZABETH GRAHAM

Few sites trigger a sense of Canadian pride as much as Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown, PEI.

The massive complex in the heart of Charlottetown might seem a tiny bit intimidating at first glance—imposing architecture taking up a full city block. But once you’ve stepped onto the property, you soon sense the people-friendly atmosphere that permeates this cultural centre that is officially Canada’s memorial to our founding fathers.

The Centre’s mandate to “inspire Canadians, through heritage and the arts, to celebrate the origins and evolution of Canada as a nation” is fulfilled through the rich programming on its stages and in its galleries and programs.

In Confederation Centre’s Upper Foyer, view an accurate replica of the original Confederation Chamber and watch the Story of Confederation unfold in an entertaining interpretation of how our nation came to be. A new film by Parks Canada, A Building of Destiny, takes you back to the discussions of September 1864 and showcases other themes relating to the First Nations at the time of Confederation and the role of women in Victorian society. Enjoy a lunch-time break with a lively performance by  Confederation Centre’s Young Company.

It’s impossible to leave Confederation Centre without taking in some live theatre. The Charlottetown Festival is noted for its first-class Canadian musicals, most famously for Anne of Green Gables–The Musical. Now in its Guinness Record-setting 54th season, the original Anne musical is a Canadian classic. Based on L.M. Montgomery’s beloved novel, the musical adaptation is guaranteed to tug at heartstrings and tickle funny bones.

With tickets in hand, it seems a perfect moment to settle in at a table in Mavor’s courtyard for dinner and a drink before the show. And don’t forget to stop by The Showcase gift shop located in the theatre lobby, which features quality handcrafted items, jewellery, pottery, women’s fashions and accessories as well as memorabilia from the famous Anne of Green Gables–The Musical and more.
