EMBRACE THE EXTRAORDINARY WITH AIR NORTH, YUKON'S AIRLINE

(2024 - Winter/Spring Issue)

Writer: NIGEL SILAS

As I settled into my seat aboard Air North, Yukon’s Airline, I felt the anticipation of an adventure waiting to unfold. This airline, steeped in history and dedicated to connecting the Yukon and beyond, has carved a niche in the skies by offering extraordinary service and an experience that goes beyond mere travel.

For 46 years, Air North and its fleet of 737s and ATRs have been linking the Yukon with British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and the rest of Canada. The company’s growth has been gradual, with focus placed on providing true value to each passenger. It’s a formula that has won the airline numerous Travellers’ Choice Awards from TripAdvisor, and of course the most important prize of all—the right to call itself “Yukon’s Airline.” Those words are much more than just a part of the official name. Air North takes the moniker seriously, and it’s reflected not only in the company’s community investment initiatives, but in their ownership; 49% of Air North is owned by the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation of Old Crow, the only fly-in community in the Yukon, and one in every five Yukoners have an investment or employment stake in the company.

Over time, Air North has evolved into an important lifeline connecting different parts of the territory and the North, with regular flights to Dawson City, Old Crow and Inuvik that are vital to those thriving communities. As the company steadily grew, that service has expanded to key destinations across Canada. Today, reaching the Yukon has never been easier, with flights out of Whitehorse year-round directly to and from Vancouver, Kelowna, Victoria, Edmonton and

Calgary. The successful recent addition of seasonal routes from the Yukon’s capital direct to and from Yellowknife, Toronto and Ottawa is testament to the airline’s commitment to opening up the territory to more travellers, and bringing it closer to its neighbours.

Air North’s journey from small operation to prominent regional carrier speaks volumes about the value it places on service excellence. For many Yukoners, the airline has evolved into something synonymous with Yukon hospitality—and it all centres on a travel adventure that is second to none. Before you’re in the air you’ll notice the option of not one, but two checked bags included with your fare, ensuring that bulky winter coat and those hiking boots have plenty of space to make the trip.

Inflight Experiences

The moment I boarded I was greeted by a friendly cabin crew who went above and beyond to ensure passengers’ needs were met, and the highlight of the journey was the inflight dining included with my fare. The Flight Kitchen, led by Chef Michael Bock, features ingredients sourced from within the Yukon to create a fantastic array of dishes such as bison shepherd’s pie and vegetarian curry. And just as I leaned back to take in the incredible mountain scenery out my window, I was handed one of Air North’s famous, fresh-baked cookies to enjoy.

Local Experiences

And whether it’s that gorgeous mountain scenery surrounding you after you land, Northern Canada’s vibrant history, an ice fishing or dogsledding adventure, or a rejuvenating hot springs and spa retreat that draws you, the Yukon has it all. But if the “choose your own adventure” pace isn’t your style, Air North provides tailored “Getaways” that bring a wide variety of unforgettable experiences to you. See the northern lights from the porch of a cabin outside historic Dawson, or experience a night in downtown Whitehorse at the Raven Inn with everything the city has to offer, from a vibrant arts scene to museums, top restaurants and local shopping delights.

With Air North, the Yukon is always close. Consider this your formal invitation to come and experience everything it has to offer, in the air and on the ground. They can’t wait to see you.
